Shopify API Connection

Prepare Shopify Store Admin URL and Admin API Access Token for a Next-Cart migration service when Shopify API setup is shown.

A valid Shopify API connection gives Next-Cart the authorized platform access required by the selected migration path.

Next-Cart may ask for your Shopify Store Admin URL and Admin API Access Token. Prepare these values from the correct Shopify store and use the current Shopify app-creation path available to your account.

Use this guide when:

  • Shopify is the Source Platform or Target Platform in your selected migration path;
  • Next-Cart shows Shopify API setup;
  • Next-Cart asks for Store Admin URL, Admin API Access Token, or related Shopify connection values.

Before you begin, confirm that:

RequirementWhy it matters
Shopify store owner, staff, or collaborator accessThe account must be allowed to manage apps and assign Admin API scopes.
Permission to create or manage a custom appShopify requires specific permissions for custom app setup and scope changes.
Scope decisionsYou need to know which data types Next-Cart must access.
Correct store domainThe token must belong to the Shopify store shown in the migration path.
Secure storageAdmin API tokens must be copied only into approved secure locations.
Required valueWhere to prepare itNotes
Store Admin URLShopify store domainUsually uses the myshopify.com store domain requested by Next-Cart.
Admin API Access TokenInstalled Shopify custom appGenerate or copy the token from the app setup path supported for your store.
  1. Sign in to the correct Shopify store.
  2. Confirm whether your store already has an existing admin-created custom app that can be used for this migration service.
  3. If you need a new custom app, use Shopify’s current custom app setup path through the Dev Dashboard or Shopify CLI, or follow the supported setup shown by Shopify for your account.
  4. Assign Admin API read access for the data included in the migration scope, such as products, collections, customers, orders, discounts, content, files, inventory, and other areas shown by Next-Cart.
  5. Install the app on the Shopify store when required by Shopify.
  6. Generate or reveal the Admin API Access Token.
  7. Copy the Admin API Access Token immediately into a secure temporary location.
  8. Copy the Store Admin URL or myshopify.com domain requested by Next-Cart.

In the Next-Cart connection setup screen, enter only the values requested by the interface.

Next-Cart fieldPlatform value
Store Admin URLShopify store admin URL or myshopify.com domain requested by Next-Cart.
Admin API Access TokenToken generated for the installed Shopify custom app.

The Shopify API connection values are ready to test in Next-Cart.

CheckPass condition
Store matchThe token belongs to the Shopify store shown in Next-Cart.
Scope coverageAdmin API scopes cover the selected migration data.
Token completenessThe full Admin API Access Token is copied without truncation or extra spaces.
Connection testNext-Cart can authenticate and read supported Shopify data.
IssueWhat to check
Authentication errorConfirm the token belongs to the installed app for the correct Shopify store.
Missing data accessReview Admin API scopes and include the required data areas.
App setup unavailableConfirm the account has permission to manage apps and use Shopify’s current custom app setup path.
Wrong store URLUse the store domain requested by Next-Cart, not a different storefront or admin environment.
Token rotation neededFollow Shopify’s current token replacement workflow. Existing admin-created app tokens may require app reinstall or replacement rather than simple rotation.

After migration work is complete and verified:

  • remove or revoke temporary API credentials where the platform provides that option;
  • reduce access if a broader permission set was used only for migration work;
  • remove copied credentials from insecure notes, tickets, chats, or shared files;
  • review the store admin account or API user used for API setup.
